Denis Edwards

Denis Edwards is a barrister at Temple Tax Chambers in London and an Advocate at the Scottish Bar. He taught law for ten years before coming to the Bar and, following a judicial assistantship in the Court of Appeal, developed a practice in public law and EU law before extending it into tax and regulatory matters, in particular VAT, customs and excise duties, and compliance. He appears in courts and tribunals at all levels throughout the United Kingdom, and has acted in cases before the House of Lords and the Supreme Court, including Fleming v HMRC, Saint Prix v Department for Work and Pensions, the Scottish Coal Company liquidation, and Bostridge v Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust.

His public and administrative law work spans judicial review in both Scotland and England & Wales, public procurement, education, community care, mental health and mental capacity, disability discrimination, and the regulatory fields formerly governed by EU law. He is a member of the Attorney General's Panel of Counsel and of the Administrative Law Bar Association, and is an accredited mediator with Normanton Chambers. He is also Vice Chair of the Statute Law Society.

He is co-editor, with Stephen Thomson, of the Administrative Law title of The Laws of Scotland: Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia (LexisNexis), and co-author of Clyde & Edwards on Judicial Review. His articles have appeared in the Law Quarterly Review, the International & Comparative Law Quarterly and the American Journal of Comparative Law, and he contributes regularly to the Tax Journal. He has served as a professional consultant to the Faculty of Law of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, teaching advocacy, ADR and legal writing.
